The Role of the Breast Microbiome in Mastitis

Mastitis is not caused by retrograde spread of bacteria from visible nipple trauma originating from the child and then entering to the breast. Human milk is naturally colonized by a large variety of bacteria called the microbiota. There's a normal balance of bacteria in normal breast milk even without infection. Once this dysbiosis or imbalance occurs, that's when mastitis can occur.
