The Rise of the Korean Immigrant Community in South Central Los Angeles
In the early 90s, approximately 50% of the population in South Central L.A., was black. Professor Stevenson says hostile relations with the L.A. P.D. wasn't the only issue at the time for people living in the community. There had also been long-running tensions between the Korean and African-American communities. Since 1965, when the Asian Exclusion Act was abolished, Los Angeles had boasted the largest Korean immigrant community in the United States.
