You need to find a long-term connection between what you're changing and what you're measuring. Changing the color of the button that people use to sign up to your product will probably not impact how much they retain 30 days after. I think having a personal relationship or nurturing that is very important. For this example, people may even prefer more, but it may actually reduce the retention because they're just loud.
