The Etymology of Mumps
In later centuries, historians and physicians recorded outbreaks of a disease that sounds pretty similar to mumps. As early as 17 55, people suspected that it was contagious. The origin of the english word for the disease mumps is a bit of a mystery. It could refer to lumps around your face or sulky. Or it's even been suggested that it comes from the difficulty in speaking experienced by people who have those salivary glands.
