The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire

Justinian was emperor from 527 to 565. He pulled together all of the centuries of growth in the Roman law into a unified code. The code itself took everything that was statutory law and reduced it into one statutory code, after which the prior laws were repealed. And so it ruled in the Roman Empire until as the Roman Empire faded, the code faded. But scholars kept aware of it, kept it alive, and ultimately you come around to Napoleon.
