If you want to go to a really good school in the US, extracurricular activities are essential. Harvard will probably deny your application if you don't have any involvement in sports or club activity. In English, when we use the phrase a big deal, we're just saying this is important. And universities are not only for academics, they're also for sports and other things as well.
