In 1906, Sanders began taking fares and making change on a streetcar in New Albany, Indiana. When he heard the U.S. Army was looking for young men to serve in Cuba, he felt called to volunteer. It's reported that his time in the army consisted of, quote, shoveling mule feces and being seasick. If he were a lawyer, he could make a couple thousand dollars in a single day.
