As a 12-year-old nerd, I was sure there had to be hundreds of thousands of intelligent species in the galaxy. But as I got older and started learning about things like the air catastrophe, I am now at the point of agnosticism. It's just possible that that climbing mountain probable to get to the high fidelity, you know, three or four errors per billion, which is really remarkable in advanced life, may have been so damn implausible, it only happened once in the history of the universe. And we just don't know.
