The American Response to World War One
The US passed the Second Sedition Act in 1918 banning interference with the war effort. Several hundred people were arrested and fined for doing things like calling President Woodrow Wilson a bad name. The common idea was that if you spoke a foreign language, a non-English language, anon-American language, you were somehow unpatriotic. A coalition of ethnic politicians pushed through this lawmaking America and the official language.
