I learned that using box shadows for custom focus styles is like technically an insufficient solution. Windows has this high contrast mode which stops the browser from rendering box shadows, period shadows are just from just gone just nowhere. So if you're using a box shadow for a focus style and someone enables Windows high contrast mode, now they can't navigate your site with a keyboard because they're your focus styles are just invisible to them. Another option is instead of using a pseudo-border around those elements use a media query element rather than having it positioned in any particular way.
