You don't necessarily have to like them or condone all their behavior, but you do care about them. Because you care about them, it makes everything else that happens important because it's important to the character. I think a lot of writers starting out wonder about when they start digesting some of the information out there in the writing universe. How do they know whether they should be plotting or if they're more inclined to be a pancer and how should they go about that?
