Researchers are piecing together clues for who knows how many different mysteries. Sometimes the answer becomes clear, but especially when it comes to trying to figure out the role humans play in strandings. Darlin thinks that sonar may have caused these whales to panic, which caused them to speed off blindly,. But she doesn't have definitive proof that's what happened. Other species of whales react completely differently to sonar. Pilot whales, when they hear a navy sonar, actually try to mimic it.
