The History of the Kingship of Sparta
According to Herodotus, the Augi-I-Dye were traditionally the senior king. However, the two kings were constitutionally equal in authority. As in the case of the Roman consuls, the fact that there are two greatly diminishes their individual power. Neither could ever achieve ultimate control of the state. It seems probable that it was partly because of this that allowed monarchy to persist at Sparta.
