The Importance of Ritual in Art
There's just too much evidence that it affects us. People definitely crave routine and ritual. And we do need sometimes that little spark that gets us out of inertia. To have rituals are so important for painting, I always like to tell my art students who are having trouble getting in the mood is I always think of my apron as like my superhero cape. So I'm putting it on and I'm stepping into that identity for some people. It's lighting a candle. My husband gets super pissed off when I like candles. He's an Enneagram six. But he's afraid that the apartment's going to burn down or something right? Like, God forbid, I light a candle
