Public institutions and investment are what make new york distinctive even to day. The subway system is unparalleled in the united states. Public housing does preserve some measure of economic diversity in the city. And i actually, one of tthe places that i wrote about in the books is hostas community college - it was threatened with closure during the fistal crisis.
