Is Palliative Care a Good Idea?

One of the first patients I took care of as an attending died from pancreatic cancer. He was a kind man with a great sense of humor, although he had a chronic medical condition. She accepted palliative care that kept her in pretty good shape for another 18 or so months. Four weeks after death, she sent me a letter thanking me for caring until the end.
