The Myth of the Ninja
The real ninjas were early democrats, striving to create a more equitable society within Japan. They worked outside the ancient Japanese samurai tradition to create a style of warfare that was incredibly modern. Despite their efforts, ninjas would eventually become more common as subjects of art and kabuki plays than as actual warriors. As a result, a myth that Hatori Hanzo was an immortal who could not be killed inevitably sprayed up.
