Zhang Jinggua, Zhang Kai-shek's son, took over as president after his father's death. He relaxed restrictions on freedom of speech and activism in 1986. Li Dong Hui was very important because his ancestors were from Taiwanese ethnic Chinese who had been there since before the Japanese colonial era.
