The Importance of Natural Selection in Chemical Evolution
There's more hydrolysis than there is synthesis in chemistry. What happens when you start making something is it falls apart. Richard Dawkins talked about natural selection as the crane that lifts things from one thing to another. And we don't have that in chemical evolution. We just have to hope that the concentrations of the right chemicals are in the right place at the right time and that they have the right reactivities to react and do stuff.
