Ukraine has wanted to be part of NATO for a long time, even before this war started. Without nuclear weapons, they feel like they've had no deterrent from Russia. For Ukraine, the kind of joint protection of this massive alliance is all that will really fend Putin off and Russia off - whoever controls Russia. We understand that while the war is ongoing, we can't become a member of NATO. However, we need to be sure that after the war, we will become a member. That's the signal we want to get"
