The Five Stages of Dynastic Change

Ibn Khaldun says each dynasty goes through five stages: conquest on basis of group solidarity. Then, emergence of a single ruler, followed by wise rule in which king looks to the good of his tribe. Last stage is period of overconfidence and luxury as rule passes to new generation. Ibn Khaldun provides many examples to illustrate his theory; first generations of Islam provide favorite example.
