Religion and caste consciousness are not the only frameworks for understanding Indian peasantry or working classes especially under colonialism. Subaltern school effectively locates all agency and processes of change in Europe, says historian Sajjayi Subramanian. India's role as one of largely reacting and adapting to European initiatives so this ostensibly radical view of colonialism is thus unable to escape many of the same assumptions of modernized session theory and the even older colonial and exoticist view of India.
