Sea Nymphs and Dolphins
The purpose of the sea nymphs for these mariner cults is unclear. Was ther purpose to prevent storms? Or was it to protect sailors from those creatures that they thought lurked beneath the waves, these sea beasts? In my reading, and in looking at the iconographic evidence, that it was, that they had power over wind and waves. They were also thought to be able to assist sailors in distress.
