In the 18 forties and 18 fifties, there was a renewed emphasis in samurai education on warrior prowess. Particularly for lower ranking samurai, swordsmanship was a unique way to distinguish yourself. Even those with a more realistc understanding of what western weapons were capable of often assumed that swordsmanship would help lead japan through these dark times.
