Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast

CHAPTER

Gidovsky Flips the Hands to Change the Etude

Gidovsky has the left hand of the piano go down while the right goes up, creating a splitting effect. By flipping the hands, Gidovsky also makes things a little bit more traditionally lyrical than Chopin does. Frankly, this completely changes the character of the etude, but I don't mind since it's quite beautiful what he achieves. The essential clarity and purity of the original is lost as well.
