Episode CLXXXVIII - How to Win a Consular Election

Emperors of Rome

CHAPTER

Isa Hardy Favor, Ye, Isn't It?

During the republican period of rome, being a consul was an honor. But during the imperial period it became something with power and authority. In one 90 c e Roman emperor commodus bohis manfrom gladiator is choosing the consuls. He appoints 25 in a single year - two for each month, plus one. That's a couple of weeks each. So my takeaway is that becoming a consul is very much about power, persuasion and corruption. And i think, to a certain extent, political campaigns are still very much like that, in broad brush strokes.
