The Chinese are worried that the US has essentially banned in a one China policy of neutrality. I think the Chinese are actually quite reticent about what to do. They've always been worried about their military capabilities, which are essentially untested. As Mike Tyson says, you don't know what it's going to be like until someone punches you in the face.
