The RAAF Captures a Flying Saucer on Ranch in Roswell
Major Jesse Marcel, an intelligence officer was sent to investigate while visiting the site. Marcel decided to comment to a local newspaper on what they had found. This may have been a mistake because it's really what launched it into the public's mind. On July 9, an airfield official clarified the statement made in the paper claiming now the debris found was from a crashed weather balloon.
