Young men and women have been shown to have thinning in the prefrontal cortex which was associated with higher levels of circulating cortisol, the stress hormone. The problem with those changes is adaptive but in a way it's maladaptive because that prefrontal cortex comes in handy for solving problems. So if that's diminished, it makes it harder to solve the problem that might be causing you chronic stress.
