The Chicago Tornado of 1876

The storm also wreaked havoc in Hyde Park, causing significant damage to the Hyde Park Presbyterian Church at 53rd Street and Washington Avenue. One newspaper claimed this weather event in 1876 was, quote, the severest tornado that ever visited Chicago. Two significant tornadoes tore across four counties in Illinois on Palm Sunday, March 28, 1920. This tornado later classified as an F4, with winds reaching 207 to 260 miles per hour, claimed the lives of 20 and injured 300. These two Illinois tornadoes were part of an estimated 37 tornadoes, 31 of which were deemed significant,. The tornado left 153 dead and greater than 1200 injured across the country.
