The Effects of Antibiotics on the Brain

In the United States, we prescribe around 7 million pounds of antibiotics to humans from doctors' offices. That equates to about 833 out of every 1,000 men, women, and child in the U.S. The brain is the most metabolically demanding organ in the whole body; it requires many more mitochondria than an average muscle cell or liver cell. One course of antibiotics can increase a person's risk of major depression by 24%. Two courses could run up that risk by 45%.
