A lot of the subredis have something which is called flare. It's a filter that groups the most interesting, the the most popular post in one community. You can really get a sense for people and their motivations by looking at flares. At the top of the subjet it there's also the best of all time last year. This will give you a sense to what's trending in a particular community - this could lead to content ideas.
