How Do Chemical Reactions Work?
In a gas, yes, their molecules always bouncing around, but the density of molecules is comparatively low. Molecules go only a tiny distance before they collide with other molecules. Most of the time, those collisions are elastic in the sense that molecule collides with another molecule, the molecules stay together. They don't start exchanging atoms or electrons or anything like that.
