The Prophetic Vision of Four Beasts
The Vulgate is the work of St. Jerome, a fifth century AD scholar and wide reader. Instead of using the Septuagint, he went right back to the Hebrew Bible. This kind of alarmed St. Augustine and they exchanged some rather terse letters about it. One that Jerome seems to prefer is to interpret each one as a different gospel. So there are four gospels. There are four beasts.
