The Roman Catholic Church's Position on Cosmology in the Early 17th Century
The official cosmology accepted by the Roman Catholic Church in the early 17th century was essentially the image of the heavens that had been described by Aristotle. Osiander sums up by saying, quote, as far as these hypotheses are concerned, let no one expect anything certain from astronomy, which cannot furnish it. End quote. It's hard to know if this strategic preface kept on the revolutions of the celestial spheres off the prohibited books index. But what is clear is that the Roman Catholics were willing to tolerate its existence for decades.
