DDLJ: A Classic Bombay Cinema
The film in some ways speaks to old school values. It's a good old family drama slash rom-com which uses some of the familiar tools of what an Indian melodrama would be. Shah Rukh Khan, who's one of the biggest stars of Bombay cinema, was already a star at this point and became a superstar after this film released as was his romantic lead Kajul. So they became the super star romantic couple of Bombay cinema for a few years since.
