The History of the Supreme Court
On January 27th, 1801, the Senate confirmed John Marshall to the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. President Adams had just over a month left in office and allowed Marshall to serve simultaneously as both Secretary of State and Chief Justice. The Supreme Court met in a dark, ground floor room of the still unfinished Capitol building but not far from the ornate Senate chambers. Few spectators ever wandered in, as there are a few cases for the Court to consider.
