The Place We Find Ourselves

CHAPTER

How to Regulate Your Child's Affect When You Are Insecurely Attached

If a child's caregiver provides attunement and interactive regulation, then the child will develop the necessary neural circuitry to regulate their own affect. A caregiver who has not addressed their own trauma will be either unable or unwilling to regulate their child. If you are an insecurely attached person who has become a parent, this does not doom you to an inability to regulate your infant's affect. Your ability to regulate your child's affect is almost entirely a function of the degree to which you have made sense of your own developmental story.
