In ancient mystery religions, there's not a lot of people talking about the afterlife being a nice place to be. The idea that you can be one, divinized, experienced theosis is still alive in the Christian East. And if all of a sudden post Christ, there's this concept that when you die, you might actually be able to be present with God and continue living. That's kind of what Catholics call redemptive suffering.
