In the novel, ned describes shine as a jackal. In real life, he was partially disabled because it turns out someone had almost killed him. Shine was looking for an escape when Ned showed up at his house. He agreed to cooperate but not necessarily because ned won him over with his tough talk or his badge. Shein's son, adam, who was 15 at the time, still remembers it all.
