The Evolution of SETI in the US
I have no idea what the attitudes in the USSR were like amongst the public, how they viewed this science. You don't see too many faculty members in astronomy departments who just work on SETI. It's kind of a rare breed of people that get to afford to do that. In the Soviet Union, it had a really different system than in the US in terms of funding. Of course, the flip side of that is that the US had much more money and technology to be able to pursue ambitious projects that the Soviet Union didn't.
