I think for engineers, coding on the whiteboard has a very bad rap with good reason. It really penalizes people who can't do lead code problems under pressure without an IDE. You need to compensate for that appropriately if it's going to take a lot of their time. I am certainly not an expert in interviewing, but that is one of those things each team needs to figure out how to go about bringing on new people.
