The Importance of Confidence in Criticism
When you're young and you're wrong, it's an assault on yourself because you're still creating yourself. Why are people who are young worse at taking criticism than people when they're older? I think that one thing is you do have to have a certain confidence. One of the things I found rather disappointing in academia was the sort of abandonment of the idea that we were actually engaged in the pursuit of truth.
