If you're an outsider, you take more chances. You're not surrounded by peers who want you to do a specific thing. No matter how independent minded you are, it's very hard to avoid conformism and getting locked into playing and winning a status game that maybe isn't the game that can matter. The real test is what you decide to do every given second moment, and how do you weigh your opportunity costs? I'd love ou to outline why that's interesting, and very specifically, how you pull it out of somebody if you're interviewing them or doing a reference jack or something.
