Science fiction turned pessimistic between the nineteenth and twentieth century. When people speculated about the future, they're more likely to have been wrong a overestimating progress than by underestimating it. I think one thing that's happened is that between the 19th and 20th century, speculative fiction, science fictionar turned pessimistic. And i now my best guess is that it is true.
