The Over Justification Effect in Games
In games, everything is pretty much volitional, right? You get to choose whether or not you're going to play a game. When you give rewards to people who are playing the game, they tend to take those rewards as a pat on the back. So that's kind of what we found. And that speaks a little bit to what you're saying, that there is something inherent about the nature of games that might change the way that we perceive some of these rewards.
