Hurston's own sympathies seem to lie squarely with tea cake, who brings janie to the muck. In thisrcar setting, janie discovers something like happiness by embracing the comradery and co operative spirit she finds among the poor black folk. With his grim ending and physical violence, their eyes were watching god could hardly be accused of undue cheer. But richard wright saw it as lacking any political message.
