There is a tendency to compare the present to a utopian future and i mean that's kind of a cognitive heuristic because we're always looking for ways to make things better. It does seem to me that some of the decrying of the current situation is a consequence of comparing it to hypothetical utopia instead of actual you know other countries or other times. Utopian regimes have been the most mercanticidal regimes of history what if people start understanding more about their biases about how they perceive the world? We no longer believe in all sorts of things that we have taken for granted, says David Frum.
