There weren't a lot of Brown actors in New York at the time because there were no parts outside of like maybe just doing Shakespeare in regional theater or something. John Leguizamo was doing this one man show called Mamba Mouth and he was doing these characters which are more fleshed out with a story. He'd never seen anything like it before. And seeing John's work, the work of someone with a dream kind of like his, was exactly what he needed to jumpstart his own dream. It came from inside of me. These characters are all people that I knew because they were all people thatI had grown up with. They're all expressions of myself.
