When a CEO has a problem, how do you know when to delegate? I think sometimes there's magical thinking around hiring this like unicorn person. There's no problem in a startup that's so difficult and so complicated that a smart generalist given sufficient time couldn't figure it out if they focused on it. When I started Yammer I knew nothing about SAS. I just thought that enterprise software should be consumerized instead of all these horrible enterprise products. All sorts of things I didn't know about I'd never done sales before,. Even though I've been part of I've been CEO of PayPal I just didn't know any of the stuff about enterprise software.
